5. Conclusions

Оглавление

In spite of the increasing interest of different species of the Annonaceae in countries with tropical and subtropical climates, they can still be defined as underutilized and neglected crops in most regions and more research is needed on the production limitations in these crops. As in other fruit crops, new increasingly cheaper sequencing technologies will result in a qualitative change in breeding programmes in these species. Some advances of in vitro protocols have been made and they could be utilized to address various breeding objectives using biotechnology procedures. Genetic transformation has successfully been performed in A. cherimola, and control of postharvest quality, greater resistance to insect pests and diseases and the production of seedless fruits should be the major objectives for genetic engineering of crops in this family.
