2. Molecular Genetics

Оглавление

Until recently, germplasm assessment strategies depended solely on the generation of morphological and agronomic trait data (Fan et al., 2013). The use of molecular genetics in the evaluation of genetic resources and the improvement of agronomic and quality characteristics of coconut lags behind many other agricultural species, primarily due to lack of available sequence information. Currently, there are only 264 genes recorded in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database for C. nucifera. As coconut is a slow-growing species, the expression of desired traits usually takes place years after planting. This slow growth combined with a difficulty in vitro culture has slowed achievements in this field.
