There has been a single attempt to develop a protocol for recovery of somatic hybrids (Haibou and Kovoor, 1981). They reported the isolation of protoplasts from immature inflorescence rachillae tissue and the production of micro-calluses from those protoplasts. A low rate of micro-callus proliferation occurred, and plantlet regeneration was not achieved.
