Oil palm improvement must proceed beyond classical trait selection, and omics research needs to go beyond looking at oil biosynthesis and fruit development (Teh et al., 2017). We need to explore carbon supply and flux, plant stress responses, nutrient uptake and water use through a combination of genetics, biochemistry, epigenetics and gene interaction coupled to more detailed and continuous phenotypic data analysis. Soh et al. (2017) provided a comprehensive review of recent progress and research avenues opened since the publication of the 1.8-Gb diploid genome of oil palm (Singh et al., 2013a). In a review dedicated to oil palm breeding, Forster et al. (2017) gave a forward vision on the potential for emerging biotechnologies for oil palm improvement including novel traits for mechanical harvesting and speciality oil production.
