Оглавление

The diversity of coconut uses ensures that there is no single desirable variety. Breeding objectives include trade-offs between food traits, cultural desires, processing requirements and productivity of oil (Bourdeix et al., 2001). Other important objectives include early maturity, environmental adaptability to drought, cold, pH and resistance to pests and diseases. Coconut breeding began in India in 1916 (Harries, 1978), although major progress was not obtained until the 1960s. Currently, 20 centres are involved in coconut breeding, concentrating on producing improved hybrids.
