Extrastriatal Dopamine Loss

Оглавление

In addition to the striatum, most of the other basal ganglia, as well as thalamus and cortex, have their own dopamine supply, and parkinsonism is associated with substantial loss in each of these areas. It has been shown that local dopamine loss in the extrastriatal basal ganglia (specifically in STN, GPi, and SNr) may contribute to the emergence of abnormal firing patterns in these nuclei, and may be involved in the effects and side effects of dopaminergic medications [7].
