Brain Atrophy in Dialysis Patients Brain Atrophy in Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis
ОглавлениеDialysis patients have a higher prevalence of brain atrophy, even at younger age, than the general population. This suggests the involvement of a mechanism that cannot be explained only by aging. We previously assessed the extent of brain atrophy in 55 dialysis patients compared with 35 healthy individuals based on the ventricular-brain ratio (VBR), calculated as the ratio of the area of the ventricles to that of the parenchyma quantitated from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images, and reported significantly higher VBR values in dialysis patients in all 10-year-interval age groups from the 30s to the 60s (Fig. 1) [1].
