Abstract: In the course of language acquisition, the acquisition of conversational implicature is a major challenge for the child. This contribution argues that so-called challenging picturebooks may constitute an important input in this regard, since they show marked patterns on the level of texts, pictures, and text-picture-combinations. Thus, the maxim of manner or a principle of markedness may be acquired with the help of this input and/or is functional in the interpretation of the respective aesthetic phenomena.
