Abstract: In this introduction, the relationship between children’s literature and pragmatic acquisition is examined from a theoretical viewpoint. The main aim of this contribution is to indicate promising areas for research on the nature of this relationship. To this end, the specifically pragmatic features of situations of reading to children are addressed as well as their overall effect on language acquisition. Furthermore, the contribution discusses the idea of children’s literature constituting a specific input for the acquisition of pragmatic phenomena. The relation of (atypical) pragmatic acquisition, didactics and school education with respect to children’s literature is briefly sketched and a proposal is made concerning the types of children’s media that might be considered relevant for research on the relationship between pragmatic acquisition and children’s literature. The contribution ends with a summary of relevant research questions for empirical investigations of this relationship.
