Colored Pencils ••

23

You can use one

color to make a lovely

shading effect. Simply

vary the pressure to

go darker where you

want a darker shade

and lighter where you

want it lighter.

Since the light is

behind the tree, use

darker greens for

the grass in front

of it to create a

shadow. Create a

starburst effect by

simply erasing the

colored pencil using

a clean white eraser

(pink erasers are not

recommended, as they

can stain the paper).

Then use a soft-

bristled paintbrush

to brush away the

eraser crumbs.

Gradients are an

effective way to color

a sky scene, such

as the one behind

this birdhouse.

Blending a Beautiful Gradient

With a bit of patience, it is possible to create a seamless gradient blend

with any shades.

Fun Ideas and Effects

1.

Apply one color.

Starting at one end of the leaf, using very light pressure,

apply the palest shade to the bottom quarter of the leaf.

2.

Apply more colors.

Switch to the next palest shade and, still using very

light pressure, apply the second shade by partially overlapping the first

color, then continue upward until more than half of the leaf is colored. Do

the same with the next two shades, and apply the darkest color to the top

of the leaf, only on the outer edge.

3.

Deepen the colors.

Continue adding color in this manner until the colors are

dark and vibrant. Then, using heavier pressure, apply a final layer with all colors.

4.

Burnish.

To make sure the white of the paper does not show through the

design, blend the colors together using heavy pressure by going back over

the drawing with a burnishing pencil (a wax pencil without any color) or

with the lightest shade used in the design.
