plans were usually elaborate, rarely unrealistic. Sometimes people think Tiny and Izzy are girlfriends. They let them think that. It’s whatever. If people ask, however, Izzy and Tiny say intimacy isn’t only for monogamous sexual relationships. They don’t want to be poseurs. They promise to love each other always, and differently when necessary, like wave sets.
Three minutes later, a car sloshes down the street. The sound curves over wet leaves, and red taillights spark the puddles. The rain makes city air shine like a wiped-down mirror, and both sisters take that gleam into their lungs. Izzy is happy to know she and Tiny are home together. Waiting for Tiny to come back can be a constant, anxious swallowing that Izzy is learning to stop. Tiny doesn’t want to be tracked. There is no other option. They’ve both tried. Both sisters see the car. It is a dark color, with six bumper stickers on the back. Izzy thinks one says EARTH. This is comforting. A goodnight. They don’t have to say anything else to each other.
