Once, Tiny went to a birthday party, and the horror of mourning lowered around her head like a hood. She hadn’t expected it. It blocked out the streamer colors and all of the sound.

After that, Tiny and Izzy promised each other to always be REAL PEOPLE, even when their teeth get soft or when they have too much money or too little. Even when they are distracted and need more time. Even when they are the adults, they will always work to change and break open and mourn and love. To remember when they need to and forget when they don’t. It is important to try, and fail, and try differently.

As if Tiny could ever forget her mother. She can just look at her hands. It is almost a religion. This promise is both hopeless and hopeful, which is why it is so strong too. Her voice is in her head. All of them.
