Barbie’s Best Baking Tips

STAY ORGANIZED

Be prepared! First, read through the recipe from

beginning to end. Then, gather the equipment

and ingredients you’ll need and lay them on a

clean work surface around you. Next, prepare

any ingredients you can in advance. As you work,

always keep your hands and the area clean. As

soon as you’re done with an ingredient, put it

away; when you’ve finished using a tool, set it

aside for washing. And once your creation goes

into the oven, don’t forget to set a timer!

PRACTICE KITCHEN SAFETY

If you’re comfortable using a knife, ask an adult to

help you choose the correct type for the task and

then hold it firmly by the handle as you work. When

you’re not using the knife, place it somewhere safe

so it won’t fall onto the floor or be grabbed by a

younger sibling. If you’re working with an electric

appliance, keep it unplugged except when in use.

To guard against burns, never touch a hot oven or

a hot pan without first putting on an oven mitt. And

don’t forget to give your freshly baked treats time

to cool before sampling them!

ASK FOR HELP IF NEEDED

Always keep an adult nearby to guide or assist you

as needed. If you’re comfortable using a knife,

ask them to choose the correct type, and make

sure you place it somewhere safe when you’re

not using it. If you’re working with an electric

appliance, have an adult around to operate it, and

unplug it when not in use. And never touch a hot

oven or pan without putting on an oven mitt—or

keep an adult around to handle them. Your loved

ones want you to succeed, so don’t be afraid to

ask for their help! Look for the helping hand on

recipes that might require some assistance.

MAKE HEALTHY CHOICES

Desserts are a yummy “sometimes” food: they’re

great for special occasions, but you never want

too much! It’s important to balance your diet with

“everyday” foods, too: fruits, vegetables, and other

rich sources of vitamins, minerals and nutrients.
