And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
Jeremiah 29:13
A couple of weeks ago a co-worker walked passed me in the hallway. I did not receive hello much less a smile. Immediately I began the frantic mental search for anything that I may have done to upset this person. However, there was nothing I could think of that could have been considered even a mild injury. Later the same day this co-worker walked by me again, again no acknowledgment. Bothered I turned around and addressed them.
Would you like to know what had caused this slight? My hair.
Yep, my hair. I had worn it straight that day. For those of you who do not know me personally, I have naturally curly wild hair. I would say that it is probably one of the first things that people notice about me; the thick unruly curls. Because my hair was sleek and smooth that day, this person did not recognize me.
I was first relieved that everything was ok between us and then I began to examine the situation. This individual recognized me by this physical characteristic. Was it all that people saw when they looked at me the rowdy tresses?
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that it was simply an example of how surface minded we all are. We tend to only look at the shell and neglect what is inside. We do it in relationships, choosing mates and making friends. We also do it to ourselves. Nice clothes, coiffed hair, shiny car and big house. We fix up the outside and ignore what is within. We present what we want the world to believe about us.
We also do it in our relationship with God. It is so much easier to stick to the surface isn’t it? Go to church, hit up Sunday school a couple of times a month and pray before dinner. We mutter prayers before we go to sleep asking for forgiveness and strength, but what about the deeper prayers? What about the opening of our hearts for His dissection and improvement?
God cares nothing for your shiny veneer. He cares about what’s inside. He cares about the condition of your heart. God wants to know the real you and wants you to know the real Him. We can never know the awesome power of our God by only dealing with the surface. We can never feel the fullness of His love, the caress of the spirit or understand the sacrifice of Jesus by only concerning ourselves with the outside.
Seek the Lord by digging a little deeper.
