This method of making a single loop is very stable, it won’t stretch or slip back and open up the fabric.

Knit the stitch in the usual way but do not allow it to drop off left needle; bring the yarn to the front between the needles, take it under then over left thumb and back between the needles; knit the stitch on left needle again and slip it off in the usual way, then lift the previous stitch on the right needle over it.
