Encircling gear

Оглавление

As the name suggests, this is where the fishing boat surrounds a shoal of fish with a long-line net which will scoop the fish out of the water. This is a very skilled way of catching fish and the fishermen have to find large shoals of fast-moving fish like mackerel, sardine, herring and, in warmer waters, tuna. They then surround this moving group of fish with a net before pulling them in. They can be very specific about what fish they are targeting and this method does not cause any damage to the seabed. The downside is that they can’t really limit the size of each fish. Modern trawlers don’t even bring the nets on board but simply suck the fish out of the water once they are close to the surface and store them still alive in giant chilled sea water tanks and then head quickly back to port when they are full.
