Pots and creels

Оглавление

Lobster, crabs, whelks and cuttlefish are nearly all caught using static pots laid to rest on the sea floor. They are often baited with unwanted or unsellable catch from other fishing methods which attract the scavengers into their underwater prison. The pots are often left for a day or so to maximize the chances of actually catching anything as the shellfish are quite able to survive in the trap, unless there is another one in the same trap and they try and eat each other. Once the traps are brought to the surface the catch is measured, with any undersize thrown back for another day. Lobsters have their claws bound to stop them injuring anyone with a nasty nip, while crabs are crippled by cutting through the tendons. The shellfish are then brought to shore and often kept in seawater tanks to be sold live.
