Static gear

Оглавление

This covers a variety of different methods to catch fish and shellfish and are most often used by smaller day boats which leave and return to port each day. In each case the gear used to catch the fish are left static on the seabed or floating above it and only catch fish which stray into them. The size of the fish can be determined by the size of the holes in the net which means smaller fish simply swim through. Also, by using floats and weights, the amount of time the gear is actively catching fish can be controlled.

Gill nets are so called because they catch the fish by the gills as they try and swim through them. They are rectangular in shape and hang like a curtain. They can be anchored to the ground or in some cases, allowed to float on the surface of the water while attached to the boat.

Hook and line is an even more specific method of catching fish as the size of the fish can be determined by the hook and the bait used. The fisherman simply lets out lines of anything up to a mile or more of baited hooks and waits for the fish to take the bait. Fish caught in this way can demand a higher premium at market as they are considered to be in the best condition. Again, there is very little damage to the seabed unless the line becomes caught and, as the fish have the advantage, it is often considered the most sustainable way of fishing.
