Of all the foods we buy, fish and shellfish are high on the ‘not a clue’ chart. With so many types of fish and decisions to make about whether to buy it frozen or fresh, filleted or not, whole or in a tranche, the easiest choice is to let the manufacturer do it for us. Hence our love of the fish finger, fish and chips and the obligatory fish pie. But there are thousands of professional sales people on hand to help: they’re called fishmongers.

There is nothing like walking into a fishmongers bursting with some of the best fresh fish and shellfish available. There’s the smell of the sea, mixed gently with the aroma of the smoked kippers or fillets and if you are lucky the trickle of water pouring into the tanks full of live crabs or lobsters.
