High Versus Low Self-Esteem

Оглавление

People with high self-esteem differ from those with low self-esteem in communication style. They tend to display different eye contact, posture, and expression. Think about your friendly and romantic relationships. What role does your opinion of your self-worth play in them?

Individuals with high self-esteem often think better of others, expect others to like them, evaluate their own performance favorably, perform well in front of others, work hard for those who demand it, feel comfortable interacting with superiors, and defend themselves against others’ negative appraisals.

In contrast, individuals with low self-esteem often disapprove of others, expect others not to like them, evaluate themselves unfavorably, perform poorly in the presence of others, feel threated by their superiors, and find it hard to defend themselves against those who view them critically, equating criticism with rejection.7

When we perceive ourselves as failures, we are more likely to present ourselves and behave in ways that cause us to fail. When we perceive ourselves as successes, we are more apt to act confidently and in ways that bring about success. Every success we have helps build our self-esteem.
