ОглавлениеI’ve always wondered why conkers are called conkers.
It seems such a strange name when they come from a tree called a horse chestnut!
Maybe it’s the difference between the name of the seed when it is on the tree (because that is what a conker is) and the name of the game that we play once the conker has been taken out of its spiky shell.
Some people think that it comes from ‘conquer’ – to beat someone in a battle; after all, you do battle each other, by hitting your conker against your opponent’s, don’t you?
Maybe it would be better to keep the conker in its shell for the battle – it does have spikes like some kind of medieval weapon!
