Before Easter eggs were made of chocolate, our popular hollow eggs were made of papier mâché! Like piñatas, they were made with paper soaked in glue because it is easier to shape. Soggy paper strips are simpler to bend and curve. Once dried, they keep their newly formed shapes, such as a donkey (in the case of a traditional Mexican piñata) or an egg (the traditional Easter shape).

It was the discovery of tempering chocolate (heating and cooling to very accurate temperatures) that finally strengthened the chocolate, allowing it to become crisp and shiny on setting. The chocolatier could now create Easter eggs!

Usually, the eggs are filled with some smaller sweets and then sealed and wrapped in foil, but sometimes they are left empty. You may recall a time when your stomach felt empty when you were hungry (especially when talking about chocolate). But you may also have felt hollow and empty in your mind; you can’t give a reason, but you just feel blank.
