Device for Cryosurgery

Оглавление

Stereotactic cryodestruction of brain tumors was performed with a commercially non-available prototype device manufactured in the Institute of Human Brain of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Saint Petersburg, Russia). Solid carbon dioxide (“dry ice”) with a temperature of about –78°C was used for cooling the acetone circulating within the cryoprobe (Fig. 1) [32]. Cryoprobes are custom-made cannulas that differ with regard to their length (up to 200 mm), outer diameter (from 1.5 to 6 mm), and volume of the cooling chamber at the tip. The temperature of the cooling chamber is regulating by the speed of the acetone circulation. In the center of the target the device may provide temperature as low as –70°C, which fully corresponds to the requirements of cryosurgery in oncology [33].
