Early postoperative MRI typically revealed necrotic foci within the targets of cryodestruction surrounded by mild-to-moderate perilesional edema (Fig. 2). Hemorrhage within the ablation area was occasionally observed, but with few exceptions it did not cause mass effect.

Follow-up MRI examination at 2–6 months after surgery usually demonstrated the formation of clearly demarcated cysts within the target of cryodestruction, which had a tendency to increase with time. Their size constituted in average 38, 29, and 23% of the total tumor volume in cases of neoplasms with a largest diameter of <5, 5–6.5, and >6.5 cm, respectively. Additionally, gradual expansion of the cerebral ventricles was frequently observed (Fig. 3).
