Dialysis Modalities and Cognitive Impairment
ОглавлениеAssociation between dialysis modalities and cognitive impairment has also been pointed out. Wolfgram et al. [12] compared the incidence of dementia between 112,960 patients undergoing hemodialysis and 8,663 patients undergoing PD and reported that the incidence was significantly lower in patients undergoing PD and remained significantly lower even after adjustment in the multivariate analysis, while the significant difference was maintained after propensity score matching. A meta-analysis by O’Lone et al. [13] revealed that patients on hemodialysis performed more poorly in tests of executive function than those on PD.
Longer dialysis sessions have been suggested to improve cognitive function. Ok et al. [14] followed up 247 patients who consented to receive 8-h dialysis therapy 3 times per week; the control group was matched for age, sex, diabetic status, and dialysis vintage (receiving 4-h dialysis therapy 3 times per week) for 12 months, and their outcomes, cognitive function, quality of life, and so on were compared. They reported that the capacity to memorize was significantly improved in patients receiving longer dialysis session length. On the contrary, frequent hemodialysis therapy, that is, 6 times per week, has not been found effective in improving cognitive function [15].
