Renin-Angiotensin System
ОглавлениеWhen the same model mice were treated with the angiotensin II receptor blocker telmisartan, accumulation of 8-OHdG and the appearance of pyknotic cells in CKD mice were suppressed, as was the case with tempol administration. Learning function, while markedly decreased in vehicle-treated CKD mice, was maintained in telmisartan-treated CKD mice at almost the same level as that in control mice [18]. These results suggest the involvement of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in oxidative stress production in the brains of CKD mice. It is noteworthy that the dose of telmisartan used in this experiment was comparable to the regular clinical dose. A meta-analysis also demonstrated the inhibitory effect of RAS inhibitors on cognitive impairment associated with Alzheimer disease or aging in clinical practice [19], suggesting a promising effect of these agents for the prevention of cognitive impairment in CKD.
