Factors Affecting Skin Surface pH Formation in Newborns Gestational Age

Оглавление

Immediately after birth, skin surface pH of both full-term and preterm born neonates is elevated (less acidic) than the pH in adults or older children and decreases within the first weeks postpartum [3740]. However, a correlation between prematurity and skin surface pH has not been demonstrated as distinct as for the permeability barrier. Skin acidification was studied in the neonatal period in 40 preterm, very low birth weight infants [39]. Gestational age had no influence on the overall maturation of the surface pH. The development of the “acid mantel” could not be distinguished from the one observed in full-term neonates [39, 40].
