The influence of gender on skin surface acidity is controversial. Early studies in low birth neonates found that females have higher pH values than males [40]. In very low birth weight infants, surface pH was higher in male than in female neonates [39]. Other authors could not confirm gender differences of the surface pH neither in full-term neonates [37] nor later in infancy [1]. A detailed gender comparison of pH with respect to other factors influencing skin surface acidity (postnatal age, anatomical site, hormone status) is needed to conclude on the role of gender on pH formation.
