Story

One sunny Saturday, Lily and her friend Emma decided to spend the day helping at the local animal shelter. They had heard from their teacher that the shelter was looking for volunteers to help take care of the animals, and both girls thought it would be a great way to spend their free time.

When they arrived at the shelter, they were greeted by the manager, Mr. Scott. «Welcome, girls!» he said with a smile. «We’re so happy to have you here today. We have lots of animals that need your help.»

Lily and Emma nodded, eager to get started. «What can we do first?» Emma asked.

Mr. Scott explained that there were several tasks they could help with: feeding the animals, cleaning the cages, and walking the dogs. «Let’s start with feeding the cats,» he suggested. «I’ll show you where everything is.»

Lily and Emma followed Mr. Scott into the room where the cats were kept. There were several small cages, each with a cat inside. Some of the cats looked a little shy, while others were more curious.

«Look at this one!» Lily said, pointing to a fluffy white cat. «She looks so cute!»

«She’s one of our new arrivals,» Mr. Scott explained. «Her name is Snowball.»

The girls carefully filled the food bowls with fresh food and placed them in the cages. The cats immediately began eating, purring with happiness. It felt good to help the animals.

After feeding the cats, it was time to clean the dog kennels. Lily and Emma grabbed buckets and mops and headed to the dog area. There were several excited dogs wagging their tails, happy to see the girls.

«Hi there, boy!» Emma said to a friendly golden retriever. «You look like you’re ready for a walk!»

Mr. Scott showed them how to clean the kennels properly and explained that it was important to keep the dogs’ living spaces clean and comfortable. Lily and Emma worked together, washing the floors and changing the bedding in each kennel.

«Now it’s time for the fun part!» Mr. Scott said with a smile. «Let’s take the dogs for a walk in the park.»

Lily and Emma each grabbed a leash and led the dogs outside. The sun was shining, and the dogs ran happily around the park, enjoying their walk. Lily was walking Snowball, the cat’s namesake, who was now a playful puppy. «This is so much fun!» Lily said. «I love helping these animals.»

After a long day of work, Lily and Emma were tired but happy. Mr. Scott thanked them for their help. «You two did an amazing job today. These animals are lucky to have volunteers like you.»

Lily smiled and said, «It was such a rewarding day. I think I’ll come back next weekend.»

«I will, too,» Emma agreed. «I’m so glad we decided to help out.»
