Choice in Learning Material

Consider a scenario for giving choice in how students learn the material. Imagine you are designing some digital content with options for how students receive direct instruction. The students access the direct instruction and are given three choices for the instructional content: a video, a text-based resource, and an interactive simulation or slides. The students are given the directive to choose two of the three pieces of content. When the students get to the assessment, it is helpful to add in a reflection question where the students share which two resources they selected and why. That piece of information does two things for you. It helps you collect some data about the types of content your students are drawn to. It also helps you reteach more successfully.
