of air that rotates rapidly; we see these in nature, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, wind storms and typhoons. Ezekiel stands transfixed in wonder, as he watches the unusual cloud approaching from a distance. Psalm 97:1-3 states: The LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof. Clouds and darkness are round about Him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of His throne. A fire goeth before Him, and burneth up His enemies round about. Arrested by the glory cloud of the presence of GOD, Ezekiel knew that his life would never be the same again.
The Hebrew word used for “cloud” is Awan [6051], which means the presence of GOD! This is the same word used in Exodus 24:15-17: And Moses went up into the mount, and a cloud covered the mount. And the glory of the LORD abode upon Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day He called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud. And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel. Here the LORD uses the natural weather system to reveal the majesty of His power, but also imbedded in this event is a much greater revelation. Ezekiel 1:4 states: a whirlwind came out of the north. In Scripture, the north is symbolic of three things: the direction from which rebuke comes, a place of fair weather, and lastly man’s delegated authority, which will be explained later. In Job chapter 37:9 and 22 it is stated: Out of the south cometh the whirlwind and cold out of the north . . . Fair weather cometh out of the north: with God is terrible majesty. Ezekiel observed the whirlwind coming from the north the place of fair weather, instead of the south and this was not a good sign because it is a picture of the unfolding of the judgment of God.
The massive wall of cloud was accompanied by an engulfing fire which did not consume in its path. This however was no ordinary flame, because it was the glory and majesty of the LORD GOD being revealed. Scriptures record that the LORD hides Himself in darkness (Exodus 20:21;
