Word of God will be examined from its Hebraic root, to unearth spellbinding truths that we would not have otherwise known. Ezekiel looks on in wonder and expectancy at these angelic creatures. As a priest and minister in the temple at Jerusalem, the prophet knew of the presence of replicas of these awesome creatures affixed on the Mercy Seat, but now he is granted the unique opportunity of seeing these living creatures for the first time. Their appearance is beyond intrigue, as there is something much more spectacular about their features that will grip our soul. In great wonder and absorbed in deep thoughts and curiosity, the first thing Ezekiel observed about these living creatures was their four faces in the likeness of man.

The LORD GOD did not comission an angel to deliver a message to the prophet, He came Himself, and the direction He was seen approaching was cause for concern. What did the house of Israel do to warrant a personal visit from the Creator of the universe? And why was the first four of their sixteen faces that of man? Let’s examine some facts that could have easily been missed. The living creatures’ faces being four in number are a total of sixteen. In Scripture the number four speaks of God’s completed creative works, Genesis 1:14-19 reads: And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: He made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, and to rule over the day and night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day. That which the Lord has spoken He has upheld by the word of His power (Hebrews 1:3), times, seasons, days, years, lights etc., are an eternal witness of His infinite wisdom and a permanent testimony of His eternal existence.
