MAKE YOUR OWN CUTTING BOARDS

Live Edge

1

Start with a slab.

This 11"-wide walnut slab was rough cut

with a chainsaw (and from a tree cut down

at my childhood home—it has been air

drying for a few years). Remove all the

bark using a chisel and mallet but leave the

natural, curvy edge of the sapwood.

2

Begin the flattening process.

Because this slab is twisted to the point

where it won’t sit flat on the planer bed, I

take down the high spots with a handplane

until the wobble has been removed. This

may or may not be necessary with your slab.
