Let Go of Protecting Oneself with Food
ОглавлениеIn our current society, more than 60 percent of the population has been categorized as overweight or obese. No apparent solution exists for this growing crisis. Of course, there are many contributors to excess body weight, including lifestyle behaviors such as eating poorly and remaining sedentary. However, if we look deeper to unearth the real causes at play, we may find that excess weight for some individuals may be linked to their inability to feel safe. The added weight provides padding and protection from attention. Julie admits that she started to gain weight as a teenager after people commented on the changes in her body and how attractive she was becoming. Her feelings of being scared and intimidated by the changes in her body manifested into overeating. During our nutrition consult, Julie reflects back to these comments, said to her some forty years ago, and is surprised at the power they continue to have over her. There is no question that they can grab hold of us.
Other clients have revealed to me that they have been physically or sexually abused in their lives, and as a result it feels safer to cover their body with excess so no one can see how attractive their body form is. So, excessive eating, much in the same way as abstinence from food, involves the energy of the root chakra. Too much eating can unground us to a similar extent as not eating at all. We numb ourselves when we take in too much food, causing ourselves to let go of feeling. When we do not eat at all, we do not have the strength to feel, to process thoughts and emotions, and to be active. In both cases, we eject ourselves from our bodies through the button of food.
Instead of hiding ourselves in the shadow of too much food, we can use food to bring out the best of us—the vital, pure essence of who we are, basking in love. When we eat according to our body's needs, our mind remains sharp and our heart strong. We can focus on the moment and give attention to any thoughts, words, or actions that float in our sky of consciousness. The right amount of food for us in the moment hits the sweet spot of our consciousness. We feel alive and connected!
