I. INTRODUCTION

The struggle to achieve the full social inclusion of the citizenship in the society stands as a priority objective of modern institutional agendas. Consequently, it is inevitable to implement effective policies that have as their central axis the health, cultural, wage, educational, labour and economic improvement of those most in need. But, above all, these actions should be under the frame of the social justice.

At the international level, there are important instruments whose apexes are aimed at promoting full equality among people and moving towards the configuration of more inclusive societies. In this normative course, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that promote the transformation of the world through its 17 SDGs and 169 targets stand out with special relevance, by focusing on people, the planet, prosperity, peace and partnerships.

In particular, SDG 10 aims to alleviate inequalities and ensure that no one is left behind by promoting the social, economic and political inclusion of all people. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to promote policies at the international level that improve the regulation and control of markets and financial institutions, also betting on development cooperation and foreign direct investment in the regions that need it most (UN, 2015).

In 2021, the European Union approved the Action Plan for the European Pillar of Social Rights which proposes concrete actions for the implementation of an economic recovery project that aims to reduce unemployment, strengthen training capacities for a new productive model and reduce poverty and social exclusion by 2030 (European Commission, 2021).

From this panorama, the commitment to social inclusion becomes an ongoing challenge that is clearly accentuated when we focus on migrants or people with disabilities. Thus, the new Strategy on the Rights of People with Disabilities for the period 2021-2030, warns of the multiple obstacles faced by this vulnerable sector mainly in terms of physical accessibility, education, training and recreational activities (European Commission, 2021).

In this framework, it is intended to address social inclusion through the discipline of sport, given the important role it plays in shaping our European society in general (Fernández, 2017). The benefits of sport allow both the improvement of physical condition and the promotion of valuable social skills, personal development and the union of communities. Under these considerations, sport stands out as an educational tool that can help citizens to be qualified for life in society (Fernández, Fernández & Valle, 2018).

To improve this reality, within the European Higher Education Area the ambitious initiative “Pathways to school success” was launched (European Commission, 2017), which promotes the implementation of innovative projects that optimize the quality of education and school performance of students. To achieve this last challenge, it is necessary to train and train the agents involved. In this order, the specialization of experts stands as a fundamental mechanism for the development of actions and actions that promote the inclusion of the most vulnerable groups through disciplines such as sport.

With these premises in mind, this chapter presents the European project “Social Inclusion through sport-based interventions” (DISCIPLINS 2018-1-ES01-KA203-050916) which addresses social inclusion through specific educational interventions based on sport within the framework of higher education and in cooperation with sports organisations. In its innovation strategy, it develops a common program of training experts through sports interventions aimed at university students interested in this field of intervention, as well as educators, social workers, young people, coaches and professionals working in organizations that deal with social inclusion and sport. Therefore, this project joins the efforts of those educational research projects that pursue the development of innovations with social significance. Below are the keys that have originated the aforementioned project and the particularities of this.
