This word was developed in medical and psychological communities to describe someone who permanently sought to change their sex assigned at birth through medical interventions. The word has also been adopted by some living full time in a sex other than the one assigned at birth. If someone prefers this term, they’ll tell you. This word is not interchangeable with transgender, though, so don’t assume.
