Disabled Travellers

Оглавление

Travellers with disabilities are generally well catered for in the Southwest, but difficulties do still arise because of the age of the region’s infrastructure, including hotels, attractions and transport. For help and advice, contact RADAR, a mine of information. It publishes an annual guide, Holidays in Britain & Ireland – A guide for Disabled People, with advice on transport and accommodation. Much of the information is also available online. As a rule, they advise using newer, purpose-built hotels that have had to comply with modern building regulations regarding accessibility, which often means staying in blandly reliable chains like Travelodge, Travel Inn, Ibis or Holiday Inn.

The Tourist Board’s official accommodation guide also provides a list of places to stay geared towards disabled people.

Trains and planes are supposed to provide practical help for wheelchair users or anyone who needs help getting on and off. Phone the airline or train-operating company in advance to find out exactly what help you can get, and book it.

The National Trust publishes an annual booklet, Information for Visitors with Disabilities, with details of accessibility, which can be downloaded from their website, t (01793) 817634, www.nationaltrust.org.uk. English Heritage produces a similar Access Guide, t 0870 333 1181, www.english-heritage.org.uk again available online, as does the Dartmoor National Parks Association: Easy Going Dartmoor, t (01626) 832093, www.dartmoor-npa.gov.uk.
