It seems appropriate in such a proud seafaring region to spend at least some of your time exploring it by boat. Sea travel is also the cheapest way of reaching the principal offshore destinations of the Scilly Isles and Lundy Island. A few of the more interesting and picturesque boat trips available in the Southwest include:

Bath: Sightseeing boat trips up the River Avon (see here).

Bristol: Hop-on-hop-off water taxis exploring the city’s industrial heritage. You can also take sightseeing cruises up the Avon Gorge from the city centre (see here).

Dartmouth: Ferry to Kingswear where you can climb aboard a steam railway (see here).

Exmouth: Boat trips up to Topsham, plus mackerel fishing trips (see here).

Looe: Trips to Looe Island Nature Reserve and shark-fishing out on the ocean (see here).

Penzance: Ferry service to the Isles of Scilly (see here).

Plymouth: Various local trips available around the harbour, the Naval Dockyard and to the Rame Peninsula, as well as passenger ferries to Spain and France (see here).

Salcombe: South Sands Ferry across the Kingsbridge Estuary to local beaches (see here).

Scilly Isles: Nature-spotting trips around the islands (see here).

Totnes: River cruises to Dartmouth, with add-on steam train rides available (see here).

Truro: Trips to Falmouth (see here).
