The most popular choice. More holiday-makers arrive in the Southwest in their cars than via any other form of transport, which can cause a fair few problems. Don’t expect to arrive anywhere anytime soon if setting out on a sunny Bank Holiday weekend when the roads into the region will be bumper to bumper all the way down. The major arteries into the Southwest are:

M4 – linking London with Bristol and the M5.

M5 – Linking the Midlands with Bristol, Bridgwater, Taunton and Exeter.

A30 – Starts in London and heads straight through the region, passing Exeter, Okehampton, Bodmin and Penzance before finally winding up at Land’s End.
