ОглавлениеTrains are not only a fast and efficient means of hopping between the region’s towns, but are also one of the most pleasant – not to mention eco-friendly – ways of exploring the countryside and coast, chugging along a network of lazy, meandering branch lines. Particularly scenic routes include the Severn Beach railway (see here), the Tarka Line between Barnstaple and Exeter (see here) and Plymouth to Liskeard. Check out www.carfreedaysout.com for details of further idyllic journeys in the region.
For some serious rail exploration, you might want to invest in a ‘Freedom of the Southwest Rail Rover’ pass, which entitles you to three days’ worth of unlimited travel on the network for £70 (£35 child), although you’ll have do a lot of travelling to make it worthwhile. It’s available from CrossCountry Trains, First Great Western and Southwest trains (see here).
Trips down memory lane back to the golden age of railways are provided by the region’s various steam railways, which include the Avon Valley Railway (see here), the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway (see here), the South Devon Railway (see here) and the Bodmin and Wenford Railway (see here).
