There are large numbers of contract workers, sales people, visiting relatives, stand-up comedians and guidebook writers booking rooms all around the Southwest at all times of year. Always book in advance to avoid trouble or disappointment. It is a depressing business working your way down a dwindling list of phone numbers from the train or car and finding that each one in turn is full. If you exhaust the lists in this book, contact the tourist information centres, who will give you another clutch of phone numbers and often make a reservation for you, perhaps for a small fee. If all else fails, it is not bad manners to ask B&Bs for recommendations. You will soon find yourself being passed from one helpful voice to another, all demanding you call back if you don’t have any luck; eventually you always do.
