Marking the Wood

Оглавление

It is a good idea for anyone starting the art of pyrography to consider his or her first attempts as practice. I suggest finding some scrap pieces of wood to make your first marks on while you build up your confidence and try out your new machine. I would recommend you choose a good plain wood, such as birch or sycamore, for your first attempts, rather than a piece with knots or a strong grain pattern. You will need as blank a canvas as possible so nothing gets in your way while you attempt to master the basic techniques. Making marks may feel slightly awkward or different to start with, but you will feel more comfortable with time and experience.

This may be one of the first times you have turned on your pyrography equipment, so make sure you are fully aware of the way it operates and any safety instructions specific to the model you are using. As soon as the power has been switched on, treat the pen very carefully, as it is not often possible to see that the metal is hot. If the machine has a temperature control dial, start with the minimum setting and gradually turn the dial until you can see a slight glow on the nib. If your machine does not have a nib, check the instruction manual for details of how long the nib should take to warm up.
