Patience is a key factor in pyrography, and the best work can be very time-consuming. You cannot rush your work, as the results will just not be the same. Heat is being used to change the surface of the wood, and it is hard to change something once it is burned too heavily. Therefore, it is often necessary to err on the side of caution and burn lightly at first. It is easier to make something gradually darker with a few applications than to go in too hard and waste time trying to correct it. With time, you will learn what your machine can do and how to use it, so the whole process will become more natural to you.

All of these experiments can form valuable research into what can be achieved with your new pyrography machine. Many pyrographers keep these trials for future reference, as you may one day be trying to recreate a certain style of mark for a drawing you inadvertently discovered during your initial experiments. One way to do this is to carry out experiments on pieces of wood with space to make notes by each mark, so you can easily remember how to reproduce any of the effects at a later date.

The best way to get to grips with this new craft is to experiment! Let your imagination run wild and feel free to be as playful with the techniques as you like. We will look at building marks up over an area to form controlled shading or tone during Chapter 2.
