Slipknot

Almost all crochet projects start with a slipknot. With crochet, there is only ever one stitch on the hook at any time and the slipknot is the starting point for all the stitches that go to make up the finished work.

When you make a slipknot, ensure the cut end of yarn is the end you need to pull to tighten the loop. Slip this loop over the crochet hook and pull up the end so the loop sits comfortably around the crochet hook, just below the actual hook section (Fig. 1). The resulting loop on your hook is your first stitch.
