BUST THE EXCUSES
ОглавлениеExcuses are often what keeps people fat. I know it isn’t always popular to say, but as human beings we are very good at conjuring them up and blaming others for the way we are. Now I want to encourage you to be completely honest with yourself and bury all the excuses you’ve used over the years for not losing the weight. I know myself because I used to use many excuses and I was great at blaming others for the size I’d become. No one was putting the food into my mouth except me and I was the one who suffered from can’t-be-bothered-itis! Fortunately, the day came when I realised I had to do it for myself. I thought through all the excuses I was making and decided to bury them for good. From now on, it was me, and me alone, who could – and would – do something about it. I want you to feel the same.
Typical excuses may include:
It’s harder as you get older.
It’s hard with children because I pick at their leftovers.
I don’t know why I’m so fat because I hardly eat anything.
It’s too expensive to eat healthily these days.
We’ve always been fat in our family so I guess there’s nothing I can do.
I don’t have time to do any exercise.
I get so stressed and food makes me feel better.
I work full time and with a family, I just don’t have time to eat healthy foods.
I eat the same as Jean next door, but she’s as thin as a rake.
I just like food and eating it. It’s good for you, anyway.
I’m just one of those people who puts weight on easily.
Diets are boring and let’s face it who wants to live on salad?
Do any of the above ring bells with you? Whenever I’m working with clients, I always begin by agreeing from the outset that excuses will be instantly ditched. If we allow excuses into our sessions we simply let the fat win and nothing will change. Try writing down the excuses you often make and then underneath write a response to bust them. For example, one of my excuses used to be that I liked junk food too much. Now my response to that is that I can enjoy a little junk food without having to deny myself. I also used to blame the food for being so bloody tasty for making me fat! My response now is that no one else makes me eat it, healthy food can be cheaper than ready meals and it’s more widely available than ever before. Plus, healthy food can be just as tasty as junk food. As you work your way through this book, I’ll continue to offer you more tools and advice to help you blow all the excuses you have away. We don’t do excuses anymore, so just forget them!
