Martine’s story

Оглавление

I met Martine several years ago. She telephoned to book an appointment with me and explained that she couldn’t understand why she was eating so much and that it was really getting her down. Her weight had ballooned and she felt that the amount she was eating was just out of control. As I chatted to her, I could feel the desperation in her voice. Martine was in a place where food was the boss, and she felt there was no stopping it from entering her mouth. We agreed to book three sessions to work together with the aim being to help her get back her control over food; we didn’t want food to become the enemy but what we did want was for Martine to become in control.

When I met Martine I understood very quickly that for her, eating was often an unconscious process. She explained that she would sit on the sofa and not even be aware of her hand feeding her mouth. As she told me that she would watch films and eat a full bag of chocolates without noticing, she smiled. Martine explained, quite rightly, that for her it was all a ‘mind thing’. My goal here was obvious: I had to develop a plan that would help her gain control of her eating habits. That plan was about reprogramming Martine’s mind. In other words, I had to help her become more conscious of her eating habits again but also help her bring back some control when eating.

I decided to facilitate a three-stage process. First, by using hypnotherapy, I helped Martine gain control of the part that was responsible for her eating. For too long she had lost control of her trigger for eating, and therefore just ate and ate without noticing. This helped her become more aware of what she was doing when it came to eating and when we met for her second session, she went on to explain that she was much more conscious of what she was doing and had actually lost 1.5kg (3lb) in a week. She explained that she now noticed specific eating actions, such as her hand moving to eat food. I was thrilled when she reported that she was now making a conscious decision whether to eat the food or not and that she was more aware of her eating habits. This was a first for Martine!

During session two, I carried out another session of hypnotherapy and used direct suggestion. As Martine deeply relaxed, I installed in her mind the idea that she now had no desire to binge and was in control of food. Outside of the hypnotherapy session, we also agreed that she would keep a diary, writing down all her thoughts and emotions during the next week. This would help her become even more conscious of what she was eating.

In our third session, I conducted a final session of hypnotherapy and installed an automatic trigger. The overall process helped Martine gain back the control she had lost over the years. With the control back in her life, she was now in a position to lose weight. Martine’s successful weight loss continued and she managed to lose 25 kilos (4 stone). For her, this wasn’t about dieting, it was about gaining control over her eating habits. Now, when it comes to food, Martine is aware of every move she makes. Food no longer rules her life.
