Summary

Оглавление

Despite the enormous success of conventional medicine, especially in combating infectious diseasesas well as in intensive care, the limitations of such medicine, which is based primarily on a pathogenetic understanding of health, have become evident. Today, conventional medicine is being employed increasingly in the integration of preventive medical practices and those of health promotion, which are based, in particular, on salutogenesis and the strengthening of resilience factors.

Evidence-informed or evidence-based methods of naturopathy as well as complementary or traditional medicine and self-care/health promotion will complement medicine in a meaningful way, with special emphasis on encouraging self-responsible, active patients as well as empathetic physicians who are genuinely interested in a participative dialogue.

Of central importance in this development is the thorough scientific investigation of naturopathy and complementary medicine, especially by focusing on the complexity of its procedures to be investigated in the sense of ‘Whole Medicine Research’, which should also be funded by public authorities.

In this context, complementary medicine will increasingly be part of future comprehensive and holistic – supposedly integrative – medicine, as is already the case in the USA.

In addition to patient activation, a central component of future Integrative Medicine is the interdisciplinary networking of all health care professions involved in medical care and health promotion, with the support of social partners being a key factor in promoting this development. In addition, the social, political and ecological conditions surrounding health should be given greater consideration in the future. Only if we succeed in modernizing medicine in the direction of Integrative Medicine, will we be able to meet the health policy challenges of the future.
