Abstract: Speech act theory, that has received its canonic form 50 years ago in John Searle’s seminal book Speech Acts. An Essay in the Philosophy of Language (1969), is among the most key approaches of linguistic pragmatics. The contributions of this volume address the status of speech act theory in the field of contemporary linguistics. In our introduction, we trace the career of speech act theory as a basic theory, not least from the perspective of some critical objections speech act theory is faced with since its very beginning. Then we focus on recent developments concerning both theoretical and empirical issues. Finally, we give summaries of the contributions in this volume.
