Оглавление

G: Hi, Betty.
2. D: Have you two met? Betty, this is George Carrier, our head of Quality Management. George this is Betty Miller, secretary to Dr. Ron Gordon, managing director production.

B: Hello, George. Nice to meet you.
G: Hi, Betty. Good to meet you too.
4. D: Ms Miller, have you met George Carrier? He’s head of Quality for Selwood Ltd.
B: I don’t believe I have.
D: George, this is Betty Miller, secretary of our managing director production.
G: How do you do, Ms Miller. Delighted to meet you.
B: How do you do, Mr Carrier.
5. D: Ms Miller, let me introduce you to George Carrier. George, this is Ms Miller.
B: How do you do, George.
G: How do you do, Ms Miller.
B: Please call me Betty.
6. D: This is our secretary, Ms Miller.
G: How do you do.

Note:

Instead of “Let me introduce...” you can say “May I introduce (a colleague of mine, Mr ...)?”, “Can I introduce you to Mr ...?”, or “I'd like to introduce you to Mr ...”

When people say “How do you do”, they are not asking. “How do you do” is not a question. It simply means “Pleased to meet you” or “Nice to meet you”. It is expressed only when you meet someone for the first time. Your reaction should therefore be “Nice to meet you too” or “Pleased to meet you.” [2]

Traditionally, a man is introduced to a woman first (Ms Miller I’d like you to meet George Carrier), and a lower ranking person to a higher ranking one. (Mr Gordon, have you met our new trainee Hans Faulhaber?) But don’t worry if you get it wrong. Except in formal situations, people don’t usually pay much attention to that rule. [6]
