There are three stages that all marriages experience: honeymoon, reality and transformation. At first, everything is wonderful in your relationship. Either there are no problems or they are so minimal that you do not even notice. You are in love and your feelings of love can sometimes blind you to situations. This is called the honeymoon stage and it usually lasts the first year or two of a marriage. The next phase is called the reality stage. This is where you learn your spouse is not perfect. They do things that annoy you and you start seeing the person you married for who they really are. The third stage is transformation. This is where both people in a marriage decide to make it work. You blend your strengths and compensate for each other’s weaknesses. You accept each other for who you really are and overlook those things that annoy you. In other words, you form a connection. As you go through the reality stage of your marriage, monitoring the quality of your connection regularly will empower you to take the necessary steps to move into the transformation stage.
